Hello, Sweet Friends! I hope you are having a good week. I'm here... just trying to survive until Friday and then I get to enjoy one whole week off for SPRING BREAK! My students are literally going crazy with spring fever and we ALL need a break. Thank goodness there is only one more day! 

Anyways... moving on...

Remember when I first posted about my reading beads {btw: reading beads are a GREAT way to track home reading minutes}? Well, let's just say that my students are totally obsessed with them! They have to read 100 minutes to get a bead and I occasionally offer special beads for special challenges.  There will def. be a Spring Break challenge and if they meet my challenge, they will get a special gold bead. These beads have been so motivating and I love how they can physically see how many minutes they have read {it's also been easy to maintain, because they only bring their charts back once a month}. This is definitely something I'll be doing next year!! Look at how many beads they have earned so far {our March calendars are due tomorrow and they'll get to put a bunch more on}:

After seeing a bunch of noise level charts on Pinterest, I decided to make my own version. I also had an empty space to fill and I had to put something colorful there, pronto! On my noise level chart I have magnets on each level and I just move the arrow to where it needs to be. We only use the noise level chart during quiet working time. I usually leave it at a "quiet whisper" and if I ever move it to "no talking" then they know I mean business!

What does your classroom schedule look like? I wanted to post mine, just in case somebody out there can use it! I use this pocket chart {click here to check it out} that I purchased last year and I have made my own subjects. I have a huge stack of different subjects and I switch them out daily -- depending on what I need. I also don't put the times because I am too lazy and because they hold me to it... "Ummm... Mrs. Erickson, it is 11:00 and we should be moving onto Math..." Ya, you know what I mean!

We are also working on 3-D shapes {click here to check them out}. I love my blow-up shapes and so do my students! These bright colors fit right into our circus theme and I love how they hang from the ceiling {they come down easy, too}.  We've been using activities from Amy's Shapin' Up Unit and my students are having tons of fun!

  2. Wow! I'm impressed with the reading beads. Our district has us keep up with reading at home so this would be a good way to motivate them. Thanks for sharing! I agree with Rachelle. I'm trying to survive too. Less than 40 days left of school!

  5. LOVE the reading beads! I would love to do that next year! I don't put times on my scheulde either. You are SO right...the kiddos will call you out on NOT sticking to the schedule EVERY time!

  13. @Kelley: SuccessMaker is a computer program that teaches to each student and their learning level in math and reading. Teacher Trade is when another second grade teachers comes to my class while I go to hers. I teach writing/health to the whole second grade and the other teachers teacher science and social studies. The kids love it! Community Circle is how I end each day. It is really quick and I gather them in a circle to give any last minute announcements and close the day. Then they get ready to go home and head out! :)

  15. I absolutely love the reading beads. How do you keep it easy for the kids to add the beads? What string/cord do you use? How is it fastened? I will definitely use this next year. Thanks for sharing.

  16. Hi Lindsey. I was doing my daily blog stalking yesterday, and I fell in love with your circus theme classroom! I have read your blog often, but the love for the circus theme happened yesterday. I thought that you had more photos of your classroom somewhere, but I am having trouble finding any. Do you have other circus themed areas in your classroom, or is this just in my imagination? Would you be willing to share more of this theme if you have more? Thanks so much!

  20. My kids have been loving your rock unit. I just got finished making the Sedimentary Rock snack. It smells sooo good that I kind of want to try a little bit for myself! hehe!

    We are currently wrapping up our Poetry Unit which they have absolutely adored! We also recently finished a discovery-based plant unit which I loved because our classroom looked like a little greenhouse with all the plant life popping up from every corner!

  34. I love the beads idea!!! I teach third grade so I am going to track the number of books. How do you keep track or have them keep track of the books they read to make sure they are honest? Also, what did you use to hold the beads so that they stay and they are easy and quick to put on?
