mini leprechaun hats

The day before St. Patrick's day, we are going to make leprechaun hats.
But not hats for us--hats for the actual, REAL leprechauns.

To make the hats, we will decorate a Styrofoam cups with markers.
Then we will leave them on our desks for the leprechauns.

While the kids are away from school, the leprechauns will visit.
They will "magically" shrink the hats so they will fit even the tiniest of leprechauns.

When the students return to school, this is what will be on their desks:

Your students will think it is magical!

So now you are probably wondering how to shrink the hats, huh?

Well, it's easy! All you need is an oven (I will be taking mine home) and a little magic.

Step One: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees (Fahrenheit).
Step Two: Place 3 or 4 Styrofoam cups upside down on a cookie sheet.
Be sure to leave plenty of space between each cup.
Step Three: Put the cookie sheet in the center of the oven.
Step Four: Keep a close eye on the cups while they shrink. This part is super cool!
Step Five: Take them out after a minute or so (when they stop moving).

Here is a before and after shot of the Styrofoam cups:

And to finish it off, all you need are the Keebler E.L. Fudge Cookies!
(Which are perfect, because they stand on their own!)

What fun activities do you do on St. Patrick's Day?

  1. I LOVE this idea! I always do the "leprechauns messed up our classroom" activity, but I really hate having it be so messy. I am totally going to do this this year! Thanks! :)

  2. Love this idea! I can't wait to do it! This is the first time I've heard of this! Too cute! :)

  3. I will be using this idea! This will be a perfect topper to the rainbow cupcakes I am making for St. Party's day! :)

  4. I'm SO sad I can't do this idea this year!!! :-( Its super cute. We only have one day of school this week, the rest of the week we are on break. I'll have to remember this for next year!!!!

  7. I went looking for the cookies today. I couldn't find them at my grocery store. Where did you get them?

  8. I adore these little hats. We will be putting our traps out on Wednesday night and hopefully we'll catch a leprechaun. ;)

  9. I'm serving pot of gold snacks on St. Patty's Day. Just fill a gold cupcake liner with Lucky Charms cereal and you have your pot of gold snack to celebrate the holiday. Before eating, graph the marshmallows found in the creal. I love munching on math!

  10. Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment! I love this idea!! I will be adding you to my sidebar and coming back often to visit!

  11. Thanks for the ideas!! Your class must have a blast!

  12. I need to do this for my kids this year. Thanks for sharing they will get a kick out of it.

  13. Do they use a green marker and color the cup so it should look green? I want to do this tomorrow but I was noticing in your picture the cup didn't look that green. Is it just an illusion and when you shrink them they look more green? lol :) Such a cute idea!

  14. Hi,
Cute idea! BUT PLEASE BE CAREFUL the fumes are VERY toxic!!!

  15. Well let's just say mine didn't turn out QUITE as cute as yours. How'd you get them so flat? Some look better than others, but nonetheless I think the kids will be stunned!

thanks for the love ♥
